Glucosidase which cleaves endo-N-acetlyhexosaminic bonds in hyaluronic acid
and chondroitin sulfate A and C to tetrasaccharide residues. As hyaluronic
acid and chondroitin sulfate are often found in connective tissues,
Hyaluronidase is often used in conjunction with collagenase to dissociate the
extracellular matrix between cells of animal tissue, in order to release
viable cells for use in tissue culture.
It may also be used to clarify
synovial fluids in order to make cell counts possible.
Unit definition: 1 U produces the same turbidity reduction in a mixture of hyaluronic acid and albumin as 1 I.U. (International Unit) of a standard hyaluronidase preparation (1).
