Digitonin is a naturally occurring surfactant especially useful for receptor solubilization. The detergent is frequently applied as hemolysis reagent and for permeabilization of certain types of cells e.g. blood platelets, hepatocytes, yeast or tumor cells. Also used for the estimation of cholesterol.
