β-Lactam antibiotic. Inhibitor of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Binds to the
active site of a transpeptidase which is involved in the synthesis of murein,
a major component of the bacterial cell wall. Frequently used in cell culture
media to prevent the growth of contaminating bacteria (2), often in
combination with streptomycin (3 - 5).
